In simple terms wear is a loss of materials from the surface by means of mechanical reduction. The Wear is a damaging, slowly removal or deformation from solid surfaces. Wear can occur by mechanical- erosion or chemically-corrosion. Wear can cause severe damage to the component, especially if it is a metal plate. Hence, wear resistant plates are developed and come in usage for durable applications. The wear related properties of a plate are referred to tribology.
These plates are resistive to: Abrasive wear- it is caused due to hard particle forces against and moving along the surface. Adhesive wear- this type of wear is caused due to a localized combination of solid surfaces. Erosion- it is caused due to mechanical interaction of plate surface and fluid. This is the main reason for early break down of plates. Cavitation erosion- it is the form of erosion causing the material to wear by the action of vapor bubbles in a turbulent flow. Fatigue wear- it is wear arrived from solid surface caused by fracture from material fatigue.
Properties :
Wear Resistant Plates have outstanding resistance to corrosion when exposed to different cyclic mild environments. It offers the best performance in warm chloride environments while resisting pitting and crevice corrosion.
These plates can be exposed to stress corrosion cracking (SSC) even in elevated temperatures. It has a higher resistivity to oxidation in intermitting environments. The presence of resistance alloying elements offers continuous service in moderate to higher temperatures. In severe conditions, these plates are recommended because of its function against carbide precipitation.
Wear resistance plates are ideal for the applications where higher strength is needed. Moreover, plates can be rolled out from both hot and cold rolling operations. The machines are used in production associated with grade. Before machining operation, working surface and tooling should be finished for accurate results. Precautions are taken to decrease the cross-contamination in order to get high end finish. Advantageously, these plates are processed from metal treatment operations to get desired mechanical properties. For the bulky plates post, weld heat treatments are required. The standard hot working process is also preferred. All most every welding technique can be used for welding.
